The Wounded Warrior Project: My Story About Timothy

In the United States of America, twenty-two military veterans a day commit suicide. That’s one every eight minutes.  By the time I finish this workday, three more will have taken their lives.  In recent years more veterans have died by their own hand than service members lost to the enemy in Iraq, and Afghanistan.

During one of my visits to a Wounded Warrior Project facility, I came across a gentleman by the name of Timothy who was around 24 years of age. Tim volunteered and enlisted in the Marine Corps when he was 18 years old, served for five years – three of those years spent in Afghanistan and Iraq. He got out just about six months ago and he had a plan. He was going to go to school, and he seemed ashamed to tell me that he only lasted about two months. He expressed to me that he didn’t feel like he fit in, he didn’t feel like he belonged. He explained that he had nothing in common with his classmates, and teachers.

He needed to find a job, and was hoping that doctors could figure out a way to stop the ringing in his ears so he could get more than three hours of sleep each night.  Not to seem uncompassionate, but I have heard many of these stories before from being so involved with the Wounded Warrior Project, so none of Tim’s story was much of a surprise, but what really punched me in the gut was when his eyes welled up and he looked at me and said that the worst part of all of it was how anonymous he felt when he came home.

Till this day it’s hard to keep a dry eye when I think of that moment.  Thank god, unlike many sad stories you will hear about our veterans , this has a happy ending. Tim went to the Wounded Warrior Project, they took him in, got him an education and helped his transition into civilian life.

Help me honor those who sacrifice their lives to give us our freedoms.  Contribute to the Wounded Warrior Project at http://bit.ly/1RdM5AN

A Guide to Buying a Used Boat

You may have heard the saying ‘the best kind of boat is a friends boat’. There’s a good reason this is said. Boat ownership can be one of the most costly recreational activates to have, next to owning an airplane.  Today we are going to discuss the cost of boat ownership.  There are five things you should be aware of when determining what the cost of owning a boat will be. The first is the actual cost of the boat. You can actually finance a boat like you can a car. The next cost outside of the cost of the boat is storage. Some boat slips, depending on where you live, can cost the price of a mortgage fro an average homeowner, so I would suggest doing a lot of research before you take the leap into boat ownership.

The next cost would be maintenance. If you are the kind of person that doesn’t want to touch the boat at all or do any heavy work caring for your boat, you should budget about one percent of the cost of the boat for general maintenance. Remember, a new boat will have minimal maintenance compared to an older boat. Now if you don’t mind a little elbow grease in waxing the boat and changing the oil, you will save a considerable amount of money in the maintenance category.

The next expense to worry about would be the fuel. The average boater uses their boat about 90 hours a year. The average boat in the united states only burns between one to three gallons of diesel fuel per hour. What that means is you will burn anywhere from 90 gallons to 270 gallons, or if you’re looking at current day fuel prices that will be about $300 to $800 on fuel over the course of an entire year. You may think that 90 hours doesn’t seem like a lot of time on the water, but it really is.  The least expensive part about boat ownership is insurance. Insurance will run about half of a similar priced car.

Difference between 2 and 4 Stoke Engines

Today I would like to discuss the difference between a two stroke outboard verse a four stroke outboard. While the four stroke has to make two complete revolutions to produce a power stroke, the two stoke engine only has to rotate once.  This gives the two stroke engine an advantage in acceleration and throttle response. Two stroke engines are much simpler than a four stroke engine. Reed valves are small and lightweight. They do not need any mechanical linkage to make them open and close, since the pressure inside the crankcase does that quite well.

On four stroke engines the valves are held closed by springs. A camshaft driven by the crankshaft opens the valves at the correct time. All of these parts add weight and take up space. So the two stroke enjoys a significant advantage when you need a lot of power on your boat.  However, the four stroke theoretically has the edge on fuel economy. The two stroke is hampered because the intake and exhaust ports open at the same time. This process is called savaging. The problem is that some of the exhaust gases are left behind in the cylinder, while some of the air fuel mix gets blown right through the cylinder into the exhaust system without ever being burned.  This wastes boat fuel, and increase hydrocarbon admissions.

On a four stroke, the valves prevent the air fuel mix from escaping out the exhaust so the boat engine runs cleaner and uses less fuel. However, there is a better solution for two stokes -- evinrude direct injection. These models do not have a carburetor. Instead of an air fuel mix they recycle only air through the crankcase, and fuel is injected directly into the cylinder. The injection is precisely times so none of the fuel escapes outside of the exhaust port. This dramatically increases fuel economy, and reduces admissions.

This concludes my boating tips for the week. Check http://http://bit.ly/1RdM5AN/ next week for more tips on boating.

Installing Your Registration Number and Name On Your Boat

Today I’d like to walk you through the installation process of registration numbers and names for your boat. Before you install your new registration number, you will want top remove the old one if present.  A straight razor is a great way to peel off the old lettering. When using a straight razor it is important not to scratch your clear coat. Lightly use the blade to lift the vinyl off the surface, than peel the vinyl off by hand. Use a cleaner to remove to excess adhesive. Goof off brand cleaner is a great product for this.

Place two pieces of masking tape on your lettering to temporarily secure it into the proper position. Place a piece of masking tape on the middle of the graphic, and on one other side to ensure the graphic cannot move. Peel the decal off of the backing paper on the opposite side that it is taped all the way to the middle. Use a pair of scissors and cut-off the backing paper.

Using your squeegee, start from the middle and work outward applying the decal to the surface. Repeat the same procedure for the second half of the decal.  After the decal has been fully applied to the surface, carefully peel off the application tape. Use the same procedure to install your boat name.

You can order your boat lettering at one of many online websites. Just search boat decals, this should give you a variety of online stores to choose your perfect decal. If you do not feel confident that you can place your own decal, call your local marine shops and hire a professional.

This concludes my boating tips for the week. Check http://http://bit.ly/1RdM5AN/ next week for more tips on boating.

How To Avoid A Collision On Your Motorcycle

Motorcyclists are most vulnerable on local streets.  While you may never eliminate your risk of injury on the road, you can certainly take steps to reduce them. Everyone will tell you that one of the best ways to help minimize your risk of getting hit is by wearing very bright colors and reflective clothing, but very often when you are hit, you’ll find that it was simply because the person was not paying attention to the road. In this case your bright colors and reflective clothing isn’t going to save you from getting hit.

Don’t get me wrong, bright colors and protective gear are essential for safe riding, but the best way to really avoid collisions is to be aware of your surroundings. Every time you come to a stop, always look behind you.  One time I was ridding my Indian motorcycle at night, and I got caught at a very long traffic light.  I saw a car from behind pull out from a bar, and it was approaching me fast.  It didn’t look like the car was going to slow down, so I turned around and aggressively waved to get the attention of the driver. Eventually I did, and she slammed on her breaks, stopping dangerously close to my motorcycle.  Having the good sense to look behind me saved my life. Had I not been paying attention, she would have slammed into the back of my motorcycle.  Since then anytime I come to a stop, I look behind me.

You also have to have very good instincts to ride safe. This can mean the difference between life and death.  An example of that is having the ability and quick sense to abandon your bike if necessary to avoid a collision. This is not an easy thing to do. Jumping off anything that is in motion, is not a natural reaction for people – we tend to freeze-up and embrace for the impact.  Many injuries and deaths amongst motorcyclist probably could have been avoided had the biker jumped from their motorcycle.  You will most definitely have sores and rashes, but it will be significantly reduced from what would have happened had you collided head on with a vehicle.

Be safe out there, and checkout my blogs weekly at http://http://bit.ly/1RdM5AN/ for more motorcycle riding tips.

Why regular people are voting for Donald Trump to take on Hillary Clinton

The 2016 GOP Presidential Primary resembles a three ring circus with characters spewing outrageous nonsense in order to secure the GOP nomination to face off against Hillary Clinton to fill the seat currently be held by President Obama.

This week we witnessed Marco Rubio, who is desperate to gain traction for his campaign, make the same mistake that Jeb Bush, Chris Christie and others have made – he went after Donald Trump.  When I say he went after Trump, I mean he really went after him.  At a campaign rally in Roanoke, Virginia, Rubio decided to hit back at Trump for calling him, “little Marco” saying, “…He’s always calling me little Marco. And I’ll admit he’s taller than me he’s like six-two. Which is why I don’t understand why his hands are the size of someone who’s five-two. Have you seen his hands? They’re like this. And you know what they say about men with small hands…”

Rubio paused there to let the joke sink into the brains of what appeared to be a very young audience. If you watch the video, you will see the audience become uncomfortable as they whisper to each other, clearly wondering where the joke was going.

At first Rubio was grinning, but then it seemed as if he too became uncomfortable and quickly filled in the rest of the adage which is usually ends with a sexual insult saying,“You can’t trust them. You can’t trust them. You can’t trust them. Alright? You can’t trust them.”

The Rubio campaign must have felt the joke went over well because they posted video of “little Marco” dissing Trump on “YouTube” where it barely got 130 thousand views.

It became really obvious that the joke had no place in Presidential politics when Marco was forced to defend it at the GOP debate sponsored by CNN Thursday night.  Rubio told the moderators and the public that Trump disses everyone so therefore it is fair game to dis Trump.

Whether or not you believe that the correct way to thwart a bully is by bullying right back, what seems to be clear is that those who dis Trump wind up losing traction in the GOP race to gain the nomination and face off against Hillary Clinton in November.

If you don’t believe me, just think back to when Jeb Bush, Chris Christie and Mike Huckabee all came out swinging against Trump.  In short order they were all forced to drop out of the race because their showing was so dismal. While Jeb Bush faded into the shadows, Mike Huckabee's daughter became Trumps campaign manager and Chris Christie is now following Trump around the country; introducing him at rallies then standing behind him while Trump speaks, his eyes never shifting off the GOP front runner as if he was Trump’s groupie.

You would think that the GOP establishment would consider what happened to Bush, Christie and Huckabee as a lesson and refrain from bashing Trump - WRONG. Enter Mitt Romney, the twice failed GOP Presidential candidate who delivered a scathing speech followed by several equally as scathing interviews telling people why Trump shouldn’t be the GOP nominee.

Why the GOP would think Romney could get people to follow him is a mystery.  What isn’t a mystery is the result of Super Saturday’s elections, conventions and caucuses.  Even with the establishment piling on against him, the socially moderate Trump managed to tie with the evangelical Cruz – each taking two states.  Rubio, who seemed to be the preferred candidate of the establishment didn’t even break 15% in any of the states and neither did Kasich who many are calling the anti-Trump.

As it stands today, out of the 2,472 delegates needed to sew up the nomination, Trump has 380, Cruz has 297, Rubio has 123, Kasich has 34 and Ben Carson, who has suspended his campaign, has 8.

Now I’m not a political pundit or a campaign whiz kid. I’m just a regular businessman who happens to be pretty good at adding things up.  What seems evident to me is that the more the establishment tells Trump to get out, the more the people want him to be the nominee to take on Hillary Clinton to fill the seat being vacated by President Obama.

If you're wondering why the establishment can't see that, my answer is simple - the establishment simply doesn't listen to the people it represents which is why the “people” are supporting the only guy out there who isn’t part of any political establishment.

Why a Business Owner is the Right Person to Lead America

Anyone who knows me knows that I revere God, Family and Country. While I don't usually wear my political heart on my sleeve, I do have strong opinions regarding the upcoming Presidential election which I will share right here, so if you're one of those people who don't believe in talking sex, politics or religion, I suggest you abandon right now.

If you are someone with an open mind who wants to hear all sides of things, then hang in so I can tell you why I think America needs a business owner to be President.

The field of Presidential candidates is crowded on both sides of the aisle. Let's consider the Washington insiders and their positions first:

Hillary Clinton (D) Former First Lady, US Senator and Secretary of State: Simply put, Ms. Clinton comes off less than trust worthy after the Bengazi email scandal. She also has a problem with some women who feel that her decision to overlook her husband's multiple infidelities (Jennifer Flowers, Monica Lewinsky and who knows who else) reduces her credibility as a feminist. Moreover, Ms. Clinton is presumptive and dismissive of the American people; she was the original architect of Obama Care and other programs which have wrecked havoc on the American economy.

Bernie Sanders (D) US Senator Vermont: Sanders is a Socialist who has stated that he wants businesses to pay 90% of their income in taxes. NINETY PERCENT - In what business model does that make any sense?

John Kasich (R) Governor Ohio: Kasich has spent more than half his adult career serving as an elected official. People who spend that much time in government have a distorted value of money and little idea of what it takes to run a small business.

Jeb Bush (R) Former Governor of Florida and Secretary of Commerce: Let's face it, Jeb Bush grew up inside politics. Yes he is a Real Estate Developer but his training has always been government.

Chris Christie (R) Governor of New Jersey, former federal prosecutor: Christie spent most of his adult career in government as well. He talks like an outsider but in fact most of his paychecks have been derived from taxpayer dollars. CNBC ranked New Jersey 43rd out of 50 for business development. You don't need an Atlantic City bookmaker to tell you that those odds stink.

Marco Rubio (R) US Senator Florida: Rubio is a businessman and first term Senator. He is a great orator and has a good understanding of government and foreign policy. He is a freshman who admits that he doesn't like Washington and the way it runs and has actually boycotted procedures and votes. He is a lawyer who has admitted that he lives above his means which makes me nervous. His "path to citizenship" is unclear and that makes me uncomfortable.

Ted Cruz (R) US Senator Texas: Cruz has spent most of his adult career collecting pay checks from the taxpayer therefore he has no idea what it means to run a small business.

Then there are the outsiders.....

Dr. Ben Carson (R) Neurosurgeon: Carson's caring, gentle demeanor and the fact that he saves lives for a living makes him easy to trust. He is definitely conservative. He is definitely religious, his problem as I see it is that he is a surgeon and because he deals in life and death decisions he may have a bit of a God complex. While physicians do run their own businesses, they deal with insurance companies who have an overinflated sense of what things should cost. They are big business and not in tune with small business.

Carly Fiorina (R) Former Chief Executive Officer of Hewlett-Packard and nominee for US Senate in California 2010: While Fiorina did run a business, she managed to get herself fired despite her claim (which I do believe) that she saved the company. She also managed to lose her election for US Senate. What this tells me is that Fiorina is lacking branding and marketing skills, both of which are necessary when you are negotiating foreign policy or trying to gain confidence in your product.

Donald Trump: (R) Real Estate Developer, television personality, casino operator: Donald Trump is a New York City icon. He was launched in business by his family and he grew that investment into a fortune. He took advantage of every loop hole in government to make sure his businesses succeeded so he has a real understanding about what is right and wrong with the system. He has relationships with big businesses both at home and overseas and he knows how they operate. He is a branding genius taking himself from a bankrupt developer to a household name. He knows how to sell himself, his product and America.

In my opinion, these business people (even the quasi successful ones, are the only people who can truly turn our country around. Here's why....

Let's think about the President of the United States as the CEO of a large public corporation (America). Like all corporations, the CEO's responsibility is to create a quality product that will sell and make money for the shareholder (taxpayer). This particular corporation has 50 franchises (states) Each of those franchises have representatives (congress and senate) and all of them together have one large complaint department (Supreme Court).

The shareholder expects a return on his/her investment and it's up to the President to make sure all the franchises are delivering. The larger the return on the shareholder's investment, the happier s/he is and the more likely s/he is to work hard to make more money to reinvest in the corporation. Happy shareholders are also the best marketers for the corporation and soon they will encourage others to invest.

Unfortunately, every large, rich corporation has its share of enemies which is why the CEO must establish a strong security department (US Army, FBI, CIA) and why the shareholders must support these departments in order to protect their interests.

The above outline is a basic business model which, if followed loosely, could result in a positive outcome for the taxpayer. Unfortunately, our government operates more like a charitable organization than a corporation, redistributing money from those who produce to those who do not.

The United States tax code is in direct conflict with the philosophy upon which our country was founded. When the constitution was adopted and America was born it was based upon the principles that anyone could succeed as long as they worked hard and swore allegiance to their country. At the center of this new nation was the notion that an individual's wealth could not be taken from him/her without representation within the government.

In today's America, wealth is taken from those who work for it and is redistributed to those who do nothing to earn it. The more you work, the more you are penalized, removing any incentive to succeed.

Those who fight to protect our freedom are demonized for doing their job and are paid a salary just above minimum wage.

Our representatives run million dollar campaigns to win a seat that pays a fraction of what it cost them to get there then they spend endless hours speechifying about how we are mortgaging our children's future to pay for programs in place today. Worse still is the fact that only half of the eligible voters participate in these elections which determine who our leaders will be.

There was a time in American history when parents wanted their child to aspire to be President of the United States. Now they encourage them to be a basketball player or football star.

In today's America, political correctness has taken the place of common sense and entitlement has taken the place of responsibility. If we have any hope at all of returning America to its glory days, when hard work was revered and rewarded, we need to elect a leader who understands you are only entitled to rights if you are willing to accept responsibility for your actions.

Dealing With Labor Unions

When dealing with labor unions, the best advice I can give anyone in the contracting and plumbing industry who is thinking about signing up with a union is to make sure you are fully aware of all of their rules and regulations. I cannot tell you how many contractors I have worked, including myself, that have had problems with labor unions.  Early in my career I was in a carpenters union for about five years.  I was a pieceworker, which means that I got paid per section of the project. This is not what the union wanted. They wanted to pay workers by the hour.
One of the fundamental principles of a union is a better quality of life. They don’t believe their members should physically work as hard, or for long hours. I am not sure how it is today, but for a while there, in the 1980’s, the unions got really corrupted, and really out of control – So be careful and gather as much information as you can.
This does not apply to most contractors throughout the country. If you are a plumber working in Atlanta Georgia, with five or six people working for you, you’re not working with a union. This is a whole other deal.  Unions are people who are working on hospitals, and civic center buildings who have the money to pay for this kind of operation.  It cost a lot more to hire people in a union.
I can go on and on about problems I have seen with the union, but at the same time, they do serve their purpose. If you are a contractor and you think you may be able to make a few more dollars if you go into a union, by all means do so. Just make sure you know what you are getting into, because the last thing you want is to enter a union and not be able to get out.

If you have to ask how to estimate, you shouldn’t be in business

If you have to ask the question, how do I estimate, you shouldn’t be in the contracting or plumbing business.  If you want to learn how to estimate, my response to that is that you should have gathered enough experience by now working for other contractors.  If neither applies, I suggest purchasing books about the trade.  Hopefully you will get enough information that will help you.
For me, it may take fifteen minutes or fifteen hours to give a proper estimate. It’s hard to go into detail about all the little things you need to know. For someone like me who is in general contracting and plumbing, doing home repairs, replacing windows, or pouring concrete, may be a little easier for you to figure out mathematically.  Add up the cost of your materials and the time that you will need to complete the job, and use this information to bid the next jobs. After about four or five estimates, you will be able to develop an average price, or at least get a better idea of what you should be charging for your jobs.
If you are searching for answers to this question, it tells me that you do not have enough experience in the plumbing and contracting business, and probably shouldn’t be estimating.  You are taking a big risk estimating without knowing what you are doing.  It’s just like rolling the dice, not knowing what number you will land on.
With that said, read some books, get as many as you can. These books that are twenty dollars may have five thousand dollars worth of knowledge in them. The second thing is experience; If you are working with someone, see if you can go to a couple jobs with them to better understand the process.  They might not be willing to teach. If that is the case, than gather as much information from the books as you can.

Tough Times Are the Right Time to Increase Marketing By Giving More to Your Employees

An unstable Chinese economy and questions about where the US economy is going as we get ready for the 2016 Presidential election wreaked havoc in the stock market during the early weeks in January. This caused many small business owners to trim fat from their budgets in preparation for rainy days. Some businesses are putting expansions on hold, others are consolidating locations and liquidating equipment. For the mom and pop shop that might have limited fat in their operating budget, the first place they look to cut is staff perks which in my opinion is a big mistake.
A happy staff is the best asset any company can have. Not only do they keep the shop running, they also are the best marketers for your company if you treat them right. So the best thing to do during tough times is to invest in your employees’ happiness.
If you are at a loss for what that means you can get inspiration from some of our government agencies and corporations. For instance, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority provides continuous training for their employees. They also provide health and wellness reimbursements and a host of other packages.
While few small businesses have cash flow enough to offer their employees perks equal to those offered by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, they may be able to offer their employees a scaled down version of what the Metropolitan Transportation Authority offers.
For instance, if your business is Father and Son Plumbers, Brooklyn, New York, you could purchase Metro Cards in bulk from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to help defray the cost for your employees to travel to work.
If your company is Father and Son Plumbers, Brooklyn, Iowa, you could give your employees a $25 gift card from True Value on Front Street to replace worn tools.
If your business is Mother and Daughter Hair Salon in Brooklyn, Minnesota, you could give your hair dressers a month of free karate lessons for themselves or their children at USA Karate.
The point is, it doesn’t really matter if you are Father and Son Plumbers, Mother and Daughter Hair Salon; if your business is located in Brooklyn, New York, Iowa or Minnesota; if you have a multi-million dollar company like the Metropolitan Transportation Authority or if you own a small company that can only afford to market itself in the White Pages – when times get tough you can stretch your operating budget by making your employees happy. Providing a small perk to your employees to express your appreciation to them will encourage them to speak well about your business among their friends, family and social media. It will also help them to feel more secure in their job – something that is hugely important in an unstable economy.
A happy staff is a more productive staff and a more productive staff means more money in your pocket. In the long run a small investment will pay enormous dividends.

What Do You Do When You Underestimate An Estimate

What do you do when you underestimate a project, and you’re running out of money and you may not have enough money to finish it? My best advise to you is to try and renegotiate a deal with the owner, either to get out of the contract or to get more money from them.  This may not work with a lot of people, but it does work. I have seen this take place many times in my 25 years of working in the plumbing and construction business.
I’ve seen contractors go to owners and project managers with proper paperwork and estimations and get the more funding they need to complete the project. If you underestimated a project, and you’re starting to run out of money, or finding yourself having to dig into your savings to complete the job, you are going to have to get a little creative.  You’re going to have to start thinking outside the box. How can you change things, what can you do to get out of this mess, can you do more work and start bidding on other projects – these are questions you should ask yourself.
Something else you can do is stall the project. I don’t recommend that, but sometimes, desperate times call for desperate measures, and if you’re in a really bad place, you may have no other choice.  Sometimes by slowing the project down may persuade the project manager or property owner to change their mind, and give you the money that you need to finish the job.  At the least, this will allow you the time to take other jobs.  This is not a great thing, but certainly something that everyone in the construction industry has struggled with at least once in their day.
You have to learn from your experience and figure out how to ensure that mistake never happens again.
